I’ve decided to give the Climate Ride another try. Last year I managed only about 155 miles of the 320 mile ride. The ride is a fundraiser for a large number of groups from which the individual rider gets to specify who he/she is benefiting.
I’ll be benefiting NRDC, 350.org, and Bioneers this year, so any contribution you agree to donate on my behalf will be divided between the three
My problems last year had mainly to do with constraints imposed by my having Multiple Sclerosis. As a consequence of my handicap, I ride a three wheeled recumbent road bike and it takes me a considerable period of time to get mounted up every morning. This compels me to do a bit of leapfrogging (using a special sag wagon I have to provide myself) in order to maintain contact with the other riders. The bike I rode last year had very small wheels, and I found keeping up with the pack was also very difficult. In addition I lost almost a full day of riding because of a drum brake problem, a problem not normally part of a bike support crew’s repertoire.
This year I’ll be riding an ICE three wheeler which has a full sized drive wheel and a wind screen. I fully expect to be able to keep up with the other riders. If I can master the technology, there should be a photo accompanying this blog entry. If not, take a look at my facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/intheserviceofgaia?ref=hl or http://www.facebook.com/gwdrake.
In either case, please support my efforts by going to http://bike.climateride.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.participant&participantID=1519 and make a donation. Every donation helps, no matter how small. Thank you so much!
